Significantly, it was the experience in military mapping in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies that developed his skills in photogrammetry for mapping and surveying. He drew upon his skills and knowledge acquired in the army to advocate photogrammetry for mapping and surveying when he returned to civilian life at the Lands Department. 948:
