From 1970 to 1971 he was director of public relations (Royal Navy). He was Flag Officer, 2nd Flotilla, from 1972 to 1973. A keen gardener, he steadfastly served the Missions to Seamen over a number of years, acting as its London and south east regional director from 1977 to 1981, before becoming the charity's general secretary. He was also a devout christian who played an active role in his own parish of Bosham, West Sussex, in the diocese of Chichester.
