The whole piece is basically about the fact that Sorensen in her fiction wasn't a typical Mormon writer, how she was criticized by other Mormons for presenting "unlovely" things, that she considered herself a defender of the faith and that as part of defending the faith she had to represent it faithfully, the bad along with the good.
