4894: 4926:, which he did January 1831. In early July, Poisson declared Galois' work "incomprehensible," but encouraged Galois to "publish the whole of his work in order to form a definitive opinion." While Poisson's report was made before Galois' 14 July arrest, it took until October to reach Galois in prison. It is unsurprising, in the light of his character and situation at the time, that Galois vehemently decided against publishing his papers through the academy and instead publish them privately through his friend Auguste Chevalier. Yet Galois did not ignore Poisson's advice. He began collecting all his mathematical manuscripts while still in prison, and continued polishing his ideas until his release on 29 April 1832, after which he was somehow persuaded to participate in what proved to be a fatal duel. 4966: 1955: 461: 4269: 4952: 577: 1101: 3909: 4878: 31: 1968: 4866: 5105: 5808: 4264:{\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}{\frac {du}{dt}}&={\frac {\partial u}{\partial q_{i}}}{\dot {q}}_{i}+{\frac {\partial u}{\partial p_{i}}}{\dot {p}}_{i}+{\frac {\partial u}{\partial t}}\\&={\frac {\partial u}{\partial q_{i}}}{\frac {\partial H}{\partial p_{i}}}-{\frac {\partial u}{\partial p_{i}}}{\frac {\partial H}{\partial q_{i}}}+{\frac {\partial u}{\partial t}}\\&=+{\frac {\partial u}{\partial t}},\end{aligned}}} 1092:
question in the study of electricity was whether or not electricity was a fluid or fluids distinct from matter, or something that simply acts on matter like gravity. Coulomb, Ampère, and Poisson thought that electricity was a fluid distinct from matter. In his experimental research, starting with electrolysis, Michael Faraday sought to show this was not the case. Electricity, Faraday believed, was a part of matter.

Poisson showed that the result could be extended to a second approximation, and thus made an important advance in planetary theory.
