It's certainly nothing you have done, but I've gotten the sense that when I write something in a nautical knowlege domain, where, for example, knots and nautical miles are customary in UN documents, an editor will quickly swoop in to supply a conversion. When I write software involving such variables, I give them mnemonic names, but I don't see a widespread controversy over special symbols.
