True they did not inflict the decisive defeat on the Paiwan that was hoped for but I find difficult to believe that in the return musket volleys non were killed or injured, most likely they suffered if anything more casualties but removed their dead and wounded. "They retreated and dispersed into the jungle" after the final action. Piracy did continue until the
Japanese expedition which was one of conquest and it seems was by diplomatic arrangement with the Americans. The 1867 expedition landed then chased them into the interior and then left probably not a pleasant experience for the Paiwan either. Not a glowing success but not a defeat or Paiwan victory.
