The station had become inadequate for the level of traffic with which it was dealing; it had been designed with capacity for 650 trains and 60,000 passengers per day. In 2008, there were 1,350 trains and over 120,000 passengers per day. By 2013, it was 140,000 passengers per day. This made overcrowding and closures on safety grounds more common. Furthermore, the 1960s concrete architecture and enclosed design was widely criticised on aesthetic grounds. In November 2003, the station was voted the second biggest "eyesore" in the UK by readers of 3149: 3076: 2967: 2814: 1560: 1286: 1266: 1219:. Until recently, two small sidings (nos. 2 & 3 Engine Sidings) were located in front of the signal box which were used for stabling electric locomotives in connection with locomotive changes from diesel to electric traction on XC services heading north. As they are no longer needed, these have now been removed in connection with the ongoing resignalling project for the station area. No. 1 Engine Siding was located at the north end, between platforms 4 and 5, and was lengthened some years ago to form platform 4C. 13511: 1181: 4895: 51: 2161: 1962: 2124: 2319: 2303: 2262: 2178: 1970: 1889: 1673: 658: 3957: 3541: 3495: 3290: 3128: 2995: 2935: 2899: 2867: 2269: 2211: 1996: 1899: 1850: 1824: 1806: 1709: 1646: 3776: 3746: 3728: 3711: 3704: 3636: 3502: 3358: 3233: 3219: 2981: 2928: 2787: 2621: 2429: 2371: 2285: 2195: 2116: 1907: 1881: 1743: 1520: 1513: 1506: 934: 4099: 3965: 3644: 3422: 3344: 3173: 3120: 3110: 3038: 2876: 2742: 2570: 2293: 2186: 2020: 2012: 1681: 1663: 1655: 1619: 1470: 13523: 13487: 3618: 3526: 3509: 3436: 3351: 3240: 3226: 2988: 2751: 2731: 2699: 2681: 2562: 2422: 2356: 2276: 2203: 2132: 2005: 1936: 1872: 1842: 1834: 1816: 1789: 1727: 1717: 1598: 1591: 1091:. In 1993, a new enclosed footbridge was opened at the Wolverhampton end of the station, with access to the platforms separate from the main building; this was built primarily as a fire exit, but the new exit from the station into Navigation Street was opened to the public. All wooden fittings were removed from the platforms and new fire doors were also installed at the foot of the stairs and elevators on the platforms. 4128: 4121: 3949: 3883: 3869: 3862: 3797: 3783: 3738: 3720: 3690: 3609: 3548: 3534: 3518: 3443: 3429: 3390: 3375: 3367: 3297: 3283: 3269: 3180: 3055: 3047: 3002: 2942: 2891: 2838: 2794: 2780: 2724: 2717: 2707: 2628: 2348: 2312: 2218: 2078: 2064: 1798: 1735: 1699: 1691: 1612: 1545: 1477: 1463: 1414: 3626: 3383: 3276: 2883: 2689: 2378: 2071: 1954: 1537: 1529: 422: 403: 390: 371: 358: 339: 326: 307: 294: 275: 4068: 4061: 4036: 4029: 4004: 3997: 3972: 3876: 3840: 3833: 3826: 3790: 3769: 3697: 3602: 3595: 3588: 3450: 3415: 3304: 3212: 3187: 3166: 3136: 3102: 3093: 3063: 3031: 3009: 2949: 2845: 2831: 2801: 2758: 2635: 2614: 2607: 2578: 2553: 2546: 2521: 2514: 2507: 2482: 2475: 2468: 2443: 2436: 2364: 2170: 2139: 2107: 2057: 2028: 1977: 1944: 1915: 1605: 908: 13499: 1039:. Twelve through platforms replaced the eight through and six bay platforms of the previous station. The platforms were covered over by a seven-acre (2.8 ha) concrete deck, supported by 200 columns, upon which the concourse and other buildings were constructed. Escalators, stairs and lifts were provided to reach the platforms from the concourse. The new station had sold its 7666: 7662: 837:

The scheme proposed complete rebuilding of the street-level buildings and refurbishment of the platforms by 2013, with track and platform level remaining essentially unchanged. 1032:. Demolition of the old station and Queens Hotel began in 1964 and was not completed until 1966. To cope with the increase in traffic that this would bring, the station required an extension, the construction of which began in 1881. A number of buildings, mostly along Dudley Street, were demolished to make room for it, including a number of cottages, some business premises and a small church.
