The exact class requirements are re-evaluated for every event since the age for the youngest entries is shifted by two years for each event. The incident led to the widespread introduction of safety measures, not only at the circuit but elsewhere in the motorsport world. Safety standards improved, but the cars got faster. The move from open-cockpit roadsters to closed-cockpit coupés resulted in speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph) on the Mulsanne.
