In fact Donatello takes a more spiritual role in the later Mirage Comics and it could be argued that he was much more better written as a character who could take the role of leadership if something happened to Leonardo, again no official rank structure so it's opinion. For example, in the CGI TMNT movies, he has clearly taken more of a older-brother role in being the care taker until Leonardo returns. It's just weird to add that rank structure into the article when it states that there's no official rank structure. At best the ranking of who's next in command is ambiguous and I think the comics does that on purpose, because they know people will argue that fact.
