He tried swimming to shore but then turned around and began heading back to the boat when he went under. Pueblo Police Department divers found his body the next morning.

Caywood's death, a Democratic Party vacancy committee selected his wife, Virla Caywood, to fill out the remainder of his term. The committee chose Alamosa resident George W. Woodard to replace Caywood as a candidate in the fall 1968 statehouse elections.
